What Is Gun Milan (Ashtakoot Matching)?
Gun Milan is a compatibility method in Vedic astrology that compares the Moon sign positions of two people across eight categories, known as Kootas. Each Koota carries a fixed maximum weight, and the points earned across all eight add up to a score out of 36. The system was designed to flag potential friction points โ temperament, health, progeny, and general harmony โ before a marriage is finalized, not to replace a full chart reading.
Gun Milan Score Chart: What Each Range Means
A score of 0 to 17 out of 36 is usually treated with caution and calls for a closer dosha review before proceeding. A score of 18 to 23 is considered acceptable โ the commonly cited minimum threshold. A score of 24 to 27 is considered good, showing solid overall alignment. A score of 28 to 32 is considered very good, and 33 to 36 is considered excellent, though scores this high are relatively rare.
These ranges are a starting point for conversation, not a pass-or-fail test. A 19 with a clean dosha profile and strong 7th house is often a safer match than a 30 with an unresolved Nadi Dosha.
The 8 Kootas and Their Points
The eight categories, in order of increasing weight, are: Varna (1 point, work ethic and temperament compatibility), Vashya (2 points, mutual control and attraction), Tara (3 points, health and general wellbeing), Yoni (4 points, physical and sexual compatibility), Graha Maitri (5 points, mental and intellectual compatibility), Gana (6 points, behavioural nature), Bhakoot (7 points, love, finances, and family wellbeing), and Nadi (8 points, health and progeny).
Nadi carries the single highest weight in the entire system. When both partners share the same Nadi, all 8 points are lost at once โ which is why a couple can look fine on paper across the other seven Kootas and still end up with a moderate total score.
Why a High Score Can Still Be Risky
Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of a birth chart. It doesn't factor directly into the 36-point Gun Milan score, which is exactly why it needs to be checked separately โ a couple can score 30+ on Gun Milan and still have an unaddressed Mangal Dosha mismatch between them.
Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha work the same way. Both can quietly sit underneath a respectable-looking total score. The good news is that both doshas have well-established exceptions โ for example, Mangal Dosha is generally considered cancelled when both partners have it, or when specific planetary placements neutralize it. Recognizing whether an exception applies is exactly the part a calculator can't do.
When a Low Score Still Works
A below-threshold Gun Milan score doesn't automatically rule out a marriage. Dasha period support at the time of marriage, a strong 7th house and its lord, and a healthy Venus-Mars relationship in both charts can offset a modest Ashtakoot total. Many stable, long-running marriages are matched on charts that scored in the high teens or low twenties โ the score flagged areas to watch, and a fuller reading addressed them directly.
Online Calculator vs Expert Consultation
A free online Gun Milan calculator can generate the 36-point total in seconds, and that's useful as a first filter. What it can't do is check Mangal Dosha exceptions, weigh a Nadi Dosha against the rest of the chart, evaluate 7th-house strength, or map dasha timing for both partners against the proposed marriage date. Those steps require a manual, expert reading of both charts side by side.
For a decision as significant as marriage, treat the calculator score as a starting point for the conversation, and get a full consultation before treating any number โ high or low โ as final.
